The Tug McGraw Pre-Medical Internship

Tug McGraw Pre-Medical Interns
1st Session: Summer 2006

Barbara-Jean Arthur
School: Binghamton University-State University of New York
Major: Biology
Year: Junior
Medical interest area: “I am looking into pediatrics, though I'm open to new fields.”
Any thing else you want them to know: “I love working with children, from tutoring to counseling. A few students (9) and I started a new organization on campus last year called S.T.R.I.V.E. (Setting The Road To Improvement Via Education). S.T.R.I.V.E. is a community-based program for adolescents. Our aim is to improve and ease the transition from a high school environment to a college atmosphere. Our mission is to ensure that every child of an economically disadvantaged background has a chance to succeed to the fullest of his or her ability, in addition to ensuring a smooth college transition by minimizing the number of at-risk students who are not meeting the high school graduation requirements. We are all very aware that a solid foundation in education is the stepping stone to a bright future and just want to make sure that the high school students in our community who are deemed "at-risk" are able to have a support system; Binghamton University students who would love for them to make attending college their prime goal when they graduate high school. In this aspect, I work very well with my executive board members, the SUNY students who volunteer, and especially when it's on a one-on-one basis with the high school students. I'm absolutely grateful to be given such a great opportunity as being a part of the Tug McGraw Pre-Medical Summer Internship program. I'm very eager to learn and know that a fascinating internship awaits me. My primary goal is to one day be able to return to my homeland, Ghana, as a civil servant and be able to be of greater help to the people, especially in terms of their health.”
